In the years when he was born, no one skied in Zdiar yet, he learned everything from "tourist" skiers. He made skis out of a wooden barrel, he made metal bindings and trained daily for huge distances with ease, humility and predation. At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, he took 5th place in the 4x10km relay, and a beautiful 10th place individually in the 18km cross-country race.
