You must have noticed that our hotel has a Grand apartment called Hohenlohe. We will tell you that the apartment is named after the Prussian prince Christian Kraft Hohenlohe. But when was this prince and why is one of our apartments named after him?
Christian Hohenlohe was a large landowner, a lover of nature and, last but not least, a passionate hunter. He was also an educated man, as evidenced by the completion of his studies at the Faculty of Law in Bonn and the Military Academy in Legnica. His work in our region begins at the end of the 19th century, when, from the position of hereditary prince, he buys the estates of Javorina and Lendak from the previous landowner for the price of 500,000 Austrian guilders with the intention of establishing a Hungarian representative hunting area on the given territory. There is no doubt about his hunting passion. During his tenure, more than 400 deer were imported into the area, while at the beginning there was a 10-year ban on shooting due to the acclimatization of this population. The rarest deer was the trophy Ural deer Vasko, which was imported all the way from St. Petersburg at the prince’s request. The greatest success of Christian’s life’s work was a separate pavilion at the World Hunting Exhibition in Vienna in 1910, which was rated as one of the most beautiful ever.
In nature, however, it is necessary to maintain a balance. The prince knew this truth well and also reflected it in his district. To protect the local nature, “Jágri” were called, whom he personally selected and most of them were originally from Styria. They were advantageous in salary and in kind compared to local miners, but thanks to them, the serious threat of poaching from Poland was almost eliminated. These “Jagris” were characterized by great powers, which enabled them to supervise order in the valleys. It is interesting that today’s TANAP protectors are the indirect successors of the “Jágers”, as TANAP adopted many rules that were introduced by Christian Hohenlohe.
The beautiful hunting lodge in which the prince used to live is definitely worth mentioning. Its original form has been preserved to this day. It has been a national cultural monument since 2009 and opened to the public a few years ago. It is from this castle that we took the inspiration according to which the Grand apartment is furnished. If you want to empathize with the role of this important prince and experience the atmosphere of a hunting lodge, we definitely recommend an unforgettable stay in our themed apartment.
